Welcome to 8th Grade ELA with Mr. Woods!

8th Grade Year: The Overall Goal…

From the beginning of the year until the end, we will P.U.S.H. (Persist. Until. Success. Happens.) towards growing our understanding of English Literature as it relates to our current experience. As we continue this journey, each student will feel PREPARED and READY to continue their academic pursuits as they transition into their freshman year of High School.

Mr. Woods Daily Goals: Each Day WE WILL…

Communicate… (We will consistently engage in various types of communication to help grow our understanding of English Language Arts.)
Collaborate… (We will consistently work together with the goal of becoming experts of English language as it pertains to Literature.)
Critically Think/Create… (We will challenge ourselves to think critically about each situation we encounter through literature. We will then create/formulate perspectives based on the knowledge we gain from each experience.)

Mr. Woods STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE:

P.U.S.H. (Persist until Success Happens) YOURSELF every day as we acquire the knowledge through English Literature to grow mentally, emotionally, and personally.

Mr. Woods Classroom Rules:

Be Respectful to everyone who enters the classroom!

Be Positive!

Be Accountable!

Classroom Management Guidelines:

Entering Class at the Beginning: Students will standout outside the classroom IN A LINE and wait until I open the door.

Leaving Class at the End: Students will begin packing up their belongings to prepare for their next class 5 minutes before class is over. When your desk area is clean and your laptop is placed in the correct spot, you may stand by the door, but wait to ask to be dismissed. NO ONE can leave until Laptop Captains have checked laptops.

Beginning of Class: Each day, students will 1st grab their laptop and immediately begin working on the bell work assignment. While they are working, they will wait for two student leaders to pass out the class notebooks. Once you are finished with the bell work activity, you may quietly talk to your neighbor until I bring the class back together for the start of the lesson.

Middle of Class: (During Instruction)

Students will remain engaged and focused during direct instruction. Students will prepare to actively participate each day in various learning experiences to promote their overall growth.

End of Class: (Intervention)

Students will participate in intervention activities intended to help them succeed in their classwork while promoting growth in developing ELA skills related to core academic standards.

Bathroom Time:

You will only be permitted to use the bathroom after lesson instruction has been completed. This time is usually 40 minutes after class has started (unless it is an emergency). Only one boy and one girl are permitted to go at a time, and you must have a HALL PASS.

Materials Needed for Classroom Success:

  • Notebook with Folder attached or binder
  • Pencils
  • Highlighters
  • Pack of index cards

Classroom Cell Phone/Technology Policy:

Students are not permitted to use their phones or any technological device during class unless the teacher authorizes it.

What happens if a student is seen on their device in class?

Students seen on their phone, or any technology not permitted by the school will receive a warning to put the device away. If student is seen on their phone a second time during the same class period, he/she will be directed to place their phone in a cell phone storage organizer for the remainder of class. If the student refuses to place their phone in the storage organizer, administration will then be called to hold the student’s device for the remainder of the day.

Important Things to Remember:

Grades for your child will be updated weekly, usually on Sundays. Please feel free to regularly check grade through Skyward, using your assigned username and password. If you need assistance with your Skyward login information, please email Shaneka Taylor at

Throughout the year, students will use Clever to access online textbooks, and Schoology to access assignments. A course syllabus will be posted to Schoology at the beginning of the year, please use this resource to become more familiar with what we will be learning this year. If a student is absent, it is the responsibility of the student to ask for ANY assignments given in class while they were out. Students will then have an appropriate amount of time to complete the assignment upon their return.
